Vejrø ecological products

All Vejrø's own production is ecological. The production benefits from the mild climate and the sea, which is close by everywhere on the island, and contributes to the unique taste. Our production is seasonal and the products will therefore only be on sale in the appropriate periods throughout the year.

The ecological golden cockerels, which were highly awarded in 2009, live in our fruit plantation for twice as long as other ecological chickens. They live on a homemade fodder, in addition to what they can find themselves, which makes them the improved Danish version of the French "Bresse"!

Free range piglets living their entire lives out in the open together with their mothers, siblings and cousins! Their fodder (much like that of the other animals) is grown on Vejrø and consists of a variety of different cereals, clover grass, straw and vegetables from the kitchen garden. They could have been wild boars - only then, there would have been no pork scratching!

Calves and cows from the small Dexter breed, have year-round access to large meadows and pastures. The size of the herd is still being built up, so it is only the bull calves that get slaughtered, which happens when they are about 1 1/2 years old.

The lamb meat from the Såne lambs cannot be compared to lamb from pure breed sheep races or to foreign imported lamb. The fine structure and the lower fat marbling that the race develops is far more delicate than ordinary lamb. The colour, aroma, texture and taste of the meat depends a lot on the welfare of the lamb and the composition of the food that they eat. Our sheep are outside all year round and graze in the meadows, and during the winter they get an extra supplement of a homemade silage and oats.

In Vejrø's quest to be self sufficient, we naturally grow a large selection of free-range herbs and vegetables.

Vejrø is famous for its huge quantities of wild blackberries, but now we have established fruit plantations with cherries, plums, pears and apples again. As a supplement to the wild blackberries there is an area set aside for a variety of fruit bushes.

In the longer term we anticipate that we will be erecting greenhouses, so that the season can be extended and we can grow more sensitive crops.
